We’d like to invite you to the last wine auction the Tortellini Brother’s Winery will ever hold. You must have heard the news by now. The historical winery, known for its rare but excellent cabernets, is being sold due to the death of its owner Georgio Tortellini. And it’s such a crime! Literally.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to solve a murder (or two).
...Are you up to the challenge?

We want you to be fully involved in this murder mystery game so please come in costume and in character! We encourage you to take on a role as an interested buyer, a realtor or a reporter, for example. It’s optional, of course, but it will enhance your whole experience. Use your imagination and get ready to play!

Kewaunee County sits on top of a limestone rock layer called the Niagara Escarpment. Glaciers pushed out rolling hills that slope down to Lake Michigan on one side and the bay of Green Bay on the other. Indians came with trading posts before the lumber industry boomed. Fertile soil became home to prolific farms settled by mostly German, Czechoslovakian and Belgian immigrants.

Agricultural Heritage & Resources offers 5 tours to give you a true flavor of our “Little Europe”. A step on guide will accompany your coach.

The Ag Heritage Tour begins in an 1876 Czech farmstead for a bite to eat. The largest family owned dairy farm in the state is Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy that uses G.P.S., computer chips, an anaerobic digester and the cows are milked while riding a rotating carousel. Depending upon the season, you may tour LaCrosse Maple Syrup, Kraynik berries, Hillside apples or Aissen Christmas tree farm. A farm lunch will be served. Organic farming is growing in popularity; we’ll see how it’s done at Wavrunek Organic Farm. Along the route you’ll see many farms from European settlers.

The Czech Tour starts with a kolache and coffee and an 1876 Czech farmstead tour. Step back in time at Tom’s Bakery for fresh Belgian pies. Kele Alpaca’s utilizes an original Czech homestead complete with a square silo. For lunch, a Czech roast pork tenderloin, sour kraut, potato dumplings, dessert and Czech music. Watch a methunky demonstration and take some home. In Stangelville, tour a church on the register of historic places, shop at Konop’s, home to traditional sultz and stop at the last cheese factory in Kewaunee County; a world champion in mozzarella. We’ll tour a vineyard and sample award winning wines from the 44th parallel.

The Belgian Tour is hosted by Belgian Walloon and local historian Clete Bellin. Start with a Belgian breakfast. Learn about Belgians settlers, the oldest church on the peninsula and chapels that dot the countryside. Travel through Frog Station and hear about miracles of Robinsonville. Ride on top of the Niagara escarpment ledge to see the bay of Green Bay at the same place where Jean Nicolet did at Red Banks. Brussels Countryside Café will serve Belgian trippe, sweet and sour red cabbage, potatoes and Belgian pie. Next stop is Marchants to purchase Belgian goodies then to the cheese store. See a windmill farm, outdoor ovens, dolomite stone homes and karsts. Cross paths with the Green Bay Packers and Baby Face Nelson on this tour.

The Kewaunee Tour begins at Ag Heritage Farm with Czech kolache. Kewaunee is a harbor town on Lake Michigan that has served military, commercial and passenger ships and now great lakes anglers. The Marquette Historical District is full of extravagant homes from local dignitaries. The Jail Museum brings the colorful past to life as does the Tug Ludington that was active in World War II. The Kewaunee Inn is where we will stop for lunch and a tour. Hopefully we’ll be joined by some of the spirits that are said to still make their presence known. Shop at the fresh fish market or Tom’s Bakery. Ride through the Kewaunee River Valley to Buzz Besadny Fish Hatchery and Bruemmer Park lime quarry and zoo.

Algoma is a harbor town on Lake Michigan. The Algoma tour begins at the Farm Market Kitchen for a bite to eat. It’s a food related business incubator where some famous products got their start. Ride the coach for the Walldog tour and then to Algoma’s most delightful little bakery. Rabas Steam Engine Museum is the home to Big Jim. The grand Hotel Stebbins is our lunch stop. After lunch we’ll catch a quick tour of the Algoma marina and lighthouse and then see one of the last remaining 1920’s fish shanties on the lakeshore. Shop at Bearcats for fresh smoked fish and at Wisconsin’s oldest winery, Von Stiehl. Our last stop is the Flying Pig where you can walk through whimsical gardens.

Kewaunee: "Sledding in the Snow." Part of the fun of sledding on a farm is the exhilaration of knowing you could end up with a face full of snow at any moment and knowing wonderful treats would be waiting afterwards. Heritage Farm, N2251 Highway 42, five miles south of Kewaunee, can't promise the snow, but it will have an exhibit of old sleds for visitors to see and coffeecakes and other treats to savor Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Santa will stop in for a snack and a chat at noon; there will also other activities for the kids. And there will be cookies and candy for sale to take home with you. Admission is free. See www.agriculturalheritage.org.

Blue Mounds: "4th Annual Carol in the Cave." Underground music never sounded as sweet as carols performed from deep inside the Cave of the Mounds, 2975 Cave of the Mounds Road. A number of area choirs will give concerts Friday through next Sunday. Friday's concert is at 7 p.m.; Saturday's are at 11 a.m., 1, 3 and 4:30 p.m.; next Sunday concerts will be held are at 1 and 3 p.m. Admission is $7; part of the fee goes to a charity of the choir's choice. Advance tickets are recommended and can be purchased at www.caveofthemounds.com.

Greenbush: "A Wade House Christmas." A stop at this 1860s stagecoach inn during the holidays might have meant helping make ornaments or stringing cranberries to decorate a tree harvested by Sylvanus Wade, or maybe a horse-drawn wagon ride or carols and some fine fiddle music. Visitors don't need to travel to the past for this experience - they can take a trip to the inn at W7824 Center St., Saturday or next Sunday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Admission to this simple celebration is $11 for adults, $9.25 for students and seniors and $5.50 for children ages 5-17. Colgate: "Holiday Open House." Over the Oconomowoc River and through the woods of Holy Hill and Erin you can go Saturday and next Sunday for this open house. A number of artists will have their doors open including potters, stained-glass artists, sculptors and more. Monches Farm, 5890 Monches Road, will be open, as will an alpaca farm and a fiber arts school. The hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day; some places will be open Friday for a special preview. Cambridge: "Cambridge Country Christmas." A singing Christmas tree. Need we say more? How about strolling madrigal singers, pet photos with Santa and tea with Mrs. Cratchit. These and other special events are all scheduled to take place Friday through next Sunday in this small town's downtown. There will also be a Christmas tree lighting Friday at 6 p.m. in Veteran's Park followed by hot cocoa and cookies. See www.cambridgewi.com for details.

Michigan: "Sinterklaas Eve Procession." Santa may have his sleigh and eight tiny reindeer, but Sinterklaas has a big white horse and Zwarte Pieten handing out candy to children. A trip to Holland, Mich., Friday will give you the Dutch treat of the holiday season with this traditional St. Nicholas tale. Sinterklaas will arrive at 7 p.m. at Eight Street Market Place and lead a procession to Centennial Park. There he and his adherents will enjoy cookies and hot chocolate. Children wishing to take part in the procession can join a workshop from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. to build a lantern to carry during the procession. It's all free; see www.sinterklaaseve.com for details.

Iowa: "Prelude to Christmas." Amana, which delights in its 19th-century roots, celebrates Christmas to a fare-thee-well. There will special events there all month after the official "Prelude to Christmas" taking place Friday through next Sunday. There will be brass bands and cheese tastings, a cookie walk and blanket weaving and a whole lot more. See www.festivalsinamana.com.

Illinois: "Holidays a Cappella." If your appetite for fa-la-las is never-ending, a trip across the border will add to your holiday spirit. Chicago a Cappella will be holding a number of concerts in the Windy City and its suburbs this season, including one at 4 p.m. next Sunday at the Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave, Naperville. Wet Whistle Wine Fest - See it to Believe it!
There’s something that happens one weekend a year in Algoma that defies explanation. It’s not the two thousand visitors all smiling at the same time. It’s not the trombonist standing in a barrel on the grape stomp rack sliding through a riff, or the dirty grape-soaked sticky purple feet on the person who’s dancing across the stage in front of the band. Those are normal and to be expected. What usually throws people are all of the costumes. We don’t ask for or even suggest that anyone come dressed up like giant wine bottles, or that groups show up in shirts specially made for the weekend. We certainly don’t expect to see any nuns smoking cigarettes and drinking Naughty Girl wine.
In fact, there are things that go on at this festival that we just couldn’t make up. They happen this way with no coercion. As the saying goes, don’t take our word for it... come see it for yourself!
Instead of our usual five course wine pairing, we will be offering no-reservations wine and cheese, and wine and chocolate pairings. We are also going to experiment with a new tasting tour. Please be sure to let us know what you think of the changes after you’ve experienced them.

Historic Karsten Inn changed all of that for me.

The historic Karsten Inn is located at 112 Ellis Street in Kewaunee, Wisconsin only one block away from the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. The Inn is an old 3 story brick building that looks a rough, but it was built in 1912. It is the oldest Inn located in Kewaunee.

Inside the Inn the owners have kept everything well maintained. The Inn offers its guest 23 rooms only. As you walk into the Lobby you will see beautiful original woodwork all around you. Antique pictures, vases and sculptures decorate the room. The room rate for the night is around $100.

The rooms themselves are very nice, but still have the old antique atmosphere. We had one with a Jacuzzi tub. I guess 15 out of the 23 have them. They also had all the extras like cable TV, coffee maker, free high speed internet, and a hairdryer. Also you do get your own private bathroom.

Stories say that 3 spirits make the Karsten Inn their home. The first one is Agatha. In 1921 she was raped by a drunk neighbor close to her dad's farm. She had a child due to that which her parents raised for her. Because of this child Agatha needed money so she went to work at the Inn as a house keeper. The Inn decided to let her live in Room 310 as she worked there to help her out.

A sad end to the story says in 1937 times were too tough for her and that she was found hanging from a rope in Room 310, others say that she died on her family farm. But needless to say she is one of the most popular ghost sightings at the Inn especially in Room 310. She is said to be seen still cleaning the Inn to this day and messing with the kitchen staff.

The second spirit is William Karsten Sr. William was the original owner that built the hotel back in 1912. He is a gentle spirit with a mild temper at times. People say they smell his odor, which is unpleasant, have furniture move on them, and spot him drinking at the bar.

The third spirit is Billy Karsten III. Billy is 5 years old and full of energy and was the grandson of William Sr. Guests will hear him laughing, running up and down the halls, and see his apparition hiding around corners as if he is curious about what is going on.

The owners suggest that any guest that has experiences with the ghost write them down in a journal. In this journal there was a lot of personal experiences in here. My personal experience with my husband here was that we heard footsteps in the hallway. When we opened the door and looked in the hall they stopped. We closed our door and heard them again, opened the door once again, nothing, followed by a child's laughter. He was just playing a game with us. Later it sounded like we heard a ball being bounced down the hall. When we looked in the hall there was nothing.

Then when we were exploring the hotel, my husband said he saw a white mist that turned into an older woman's face with white hair in a bun. I did not see this because I was looking in a different direction. Later we found out that Agatha the house keeper looked exactly as he explained seeing. Was our mind playing tricks on us? Not sure, it is something that is unexplained for us.

Rumor is that many paranormal experts have stayed at the hotel with about 65% of them having evidence that the Karsten Inn is indeed haunted. If you believe this all or not, the question is do you have the guts to put the stories to the test and stay a night at the Karsten Inn? I would definitely love to go back to see what happens next time.

The 17th annual Door County Festival of Blossoms is a 5-week long celebration of blossoming beauty framed by more than 300 miles of scenic Lake Michigan shoreline.

For the past 17 years, residents and business owners on this bucolic peninsula have planted more than 2.2 million daffodil and tulip bulbs in public displays and personal gardens. Since officially being christened in Holland in 2003, the Door County USA daffodil has added its presence to the spring bloom. At the same time, Trillium, native orchids and other wildflowers spread like a colorful blanket through open meadows and forests.

When the county’s renowned cherry orchards and apple trees spring to life each May, the brilliance of their delicate and sweet-smelling blossoms takes the county by storm. Early estimates show cherry blossoms beginning in the southern part of the county during the first week of May and apple blossoms beginning 5-7 days later. Blossoms tend to spread northward up this 70-mile long peninsula about 10 miles per day. Door County has around 2,000 acres of cherry trees and approximately 500 acres of apple trees.

A gorgeous wheel of Gruyere from Switzerland was just named best cheese in the world at the 2010 World Cheese Championship in Madison.

The smear-ripened cheese, which is washed in a brine to add flavor and character, topped 2,317 other cheese entries from 20 nations around the world in the biennial contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association.

Twenty-one of the top 78 cheeses judged in Thursday's final round were made by Wisconsin cheese makers. But none of the 21 gold medal winners in their clases placed in the top three overall. Wisconsin still fared better than any other U.S. state. New York took six golds, while Idaho earned five and California four.

Another smear-ripened cheese from Switzarland called Andeerer Traum was first runner-up to the Gruyere.

Kids love pancakes Long ago someone told me that a special secret to making great pancakes was to let the batter sit awhile before frying it. So this time, I mixed up the batter, took a shower and dressed and when I returned to the batter, the ingredients had mixed so that air bubbles were in the batter. I think the bubbles made the pancakes extra light and fluffy. These homemade buttermilk pancakes blew away boxed pancake mix. Such better flavor! And it really only takes a handful of minutes more to whip up these homemade pancakes.

Wisely, the Mayor predicts it will take years to build the event to match Kewaunee's Cork's famous parade!

"The city of Green Bay will mark St. Patrick's Day next week with a celebration of music, dance, fireworks and a parade that Mayor Jim Schmitt hopes becomes an annual and growing tradition.

Schmitt hopes the event will pick up speed and become one of the city's major downtown events in three years, when St. Patrick's Day falls on a Saturday.

Murphy said he was proud of his Irish heritage, the chance to serve as honorary parade marshal and to be a part of the event.

The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and goes back to the times of ancient Greeks, who held festivities to honor Rhea, the mother of the gods. The early Christians celebrated the Mother's festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Interestingly, later on a religious order stretched the holiday to include all mothers, and named it as the Mothering Sunday. The English colonists settled in America discontinued the tradition of Mothering Sunday because of lack of time. In 1872 Julia Ward Howe organized a day for mothers dedicated to peace. It is a landmark in the history of Mother's Day.

In 1907, Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948), a Philadelphia schoolteacher, began a movement to set up a national Mother's Day in honor of her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. She solicited the help of hundreds of legislators and prominent businessmen to create a special day to honor mothers. The first Mother's Day observance was a church service honoring Anna's mother. Anna handed out her mother's favorite flowers, the white incarnations, on the occasion as they represent sweetness, purity, and patience. Anna's hard work finally paid off in the year 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday in honor of mothers.

Slowly and gradually the Mother's day became very popular and gift giving activity increased. All this commercialization of the Mother's day infuriated Anna as she believed that the day's sentiment was being sacrificed at the expense of greed and profit.

Regardless of Jarvis's worries, Mother's Day has flourished in the United States. Actually, the second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year. Although Anna may not be with us but the Mother's day lives on and has spread to various countries of the world. Many countries throughout the world celebrate Mother's Day at various times during the year, but some such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May. "Wood chips flew this week at Jamie Doeren's art studio in Abrams, where more than 30 of his fellow chainsaw artists from all over the world were gathered for the fourth annual Carve-a-Palooza.

Award-winning artists from Japan, Germany, Belgium, Great Britain and throughout the U.S. were on hand for what is primarily intended as a social event for chainsaw carvers, but is also open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Sunday.

People could watch the artists at work or wander through Doeren's sculpture garden for $5 per person or $15 per family. Proceeds will go for logs and chainsaw fuel, with any excess going toward a still-to-be-selected charity.

Doeren's studio is near the split between U.S. 41 and Wisconsin 141, at 3013 Cedar Lane in Abrams. Heading north on 41, take the Abrams exit at Oconto County D, then continue north on the east frontage road, which dead-ends at the carving site.

Potawatomi State Park:

Conditions very good for both striding and skating . Freshly groomed on February 24th. 100% snow coverage.

Crossroads at Big Creek:

Only a dusting of new snow this past week. Trails were groomed and tracked a week ago but have held up well even with a lot of use due to the cold nights. A few more bare spots have appeared but the skiing continues to be very good. Groomer heading for sunny Florida on Sunday but will groom trails this weekend if needed.

Cherry Hills Nordic Center:

With two inches of new snow, trails are soft and slow. It looks to be a windy week, so there may be drifting in the orchard. Otherwise trails are in excellent shape. There is no track set in the orchard. The head groomer will be leaving Thursday, February 25th for one week. Trails will be groomed, but not as often or to as high a standard. They should still be good however.

Whitefish Dunes State Park:

Conditions are fair. New snow less than 1″. Last groomed February 17th. Some sections soft while others are icy depending on how much sun gets to the tracks. Track is at full depth in many areas, but there are a few bare spots and some debris under the cedars and hemlocks. Red Trail that is normally double tracked is presently single track.
Peninsula State Park:

Conditions: Fair to Poor – Melting and freezing has left thin, icy snow with only a dusting of new snow.
Tracks have been too hard and icy to ski in the morning, but thaw enough by mid-afternoon to ski. Snow is melting away daily, and is getting too thin to groom well. The skate deck has been re-groomed, but there are a few spots where the Ginzu pulled up dirt. Tracks have a lot of burn through and are very icy – try waiting until afternoon to get out.

Egg decorating is the art or craft of decorating eggs. It is quite a popular art/craft form because of the attractive, smooth, oval shape of the egg. Any bird egg can be facilitated in this process, but most often the larger and stronger the eggshell is, the more favoured it will be by decorators.

Goose, duck and hens' eggs are usually "blown" - a hole is made in either end and the contents are blown out. The egg is then either carved, dyed, painted, appliqued or otherwise decorated (using a number of different techniques). Egg decoration is particularly popular in Eastern European countries.

Some eggs, like emu eggs, are so large and strong that the shells may be carved without breaking. Decorations on emu eggs take advantage of the contrast in colours between the dark green mottled outside of the shell and the shell-underlay.

The renowned Russian artist and jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé made exquisitely decorated precious metal and gemstone eggs for the Russian Court. These Fabergé eggs resembled standard decorated eggs, but they were made from gold and precious stones.

An "eggery" is typically a place where you can purchase supplies for egg art and the process of using a natural egg shell to create an art piece if often called "egging".

Egg artists also have their own guild, The International Egg Art Guild which promotes the craft of egg artistry.

Ski on the beach on new untracked snow in beautiful sunny Kewaunee just outside the door of the charming, cozy, Historic Kewaunee Inn:

"Several crashes and vehicles in ditches were reported this morning in the Green Bay area as roads remained slippery with more than an inch of lake-effect snow having fallen overnight.

Blowing snow also reduced visibility, according to the National Weather Service office in Ashwaubenon.

More than 3 inches of snow has fallen in the Green Bay area since Tuesday.

Heavy lake-effect snow was seen in Kewaunee, Manitowoc and eastern Brown County this morning, with snow falling at the rate of an inch per hour.

That prompted a winter weather advisory for Kewaunee and Manitowoc counties until 11 a.m. today. Those areas closer to Lake Michigan were expected to get 3 to 5 inches of new snow, bringing the two-day total to 4 to 7 inches.

Even when the snow stops, it'll be whipped around by north winds of 16 to 20 mph and gusting to 24 mph. Thursday will be sunny, but north-northwest winds will linger, gusting to 21 mph." Lake Michigan fishing is like a puzzle with a few of the pieces missing. At least this is how it feels some days. Just when you think you have it figured out, here comes the twist of the week. After 30 years of fishing Lake Michigan from over 20 different ports, there are a few things that remain constant. The most important key to consistently catching fish is location. In the last article we discussed location in relation to information available. Fishing reports, local bait shops and captains, and yesterdays info all help us pick a starting point. So what do we do if we have no information? What if we choose a location and the fish aren’t there? Where do we go now?

Most days, water temperature will determine fish location. If we break it down into seasonal patterns, it can begin to make sense.

Spring in my part of Wisconsin starts in mid April. The fishing can be excellent one day and downright aggravating the next. The key here is to find the warmest water in the area. Sometimes it’s the filtration discharges. Other days it’s runoff from the rivers and streams. Still other days it is small pockets of warmer water located along the shoreline. However, as spring progresses into late May, the warm water pockets are often located well off shore. A great tool is on the web. Just Google “coast watch”. There you can find satellite images showing lake surface temperatures. As I sit here in the dead of winter, the warmest water on the lake is 37.7 degrees. A small pocket located halfway between Kenosha and South Haven, right in the middle of the lake.

"MADISON — Some Wisconsin hunters wouldn’t have to worry about putting their guns in cases while they’re driving under a bill approved in the state Senate.

The bill approved Tuesday on a voice vote would allow unloaded firearms that are 26 inches or longer to be transported in vehicles. Bows and cross bows also wouldn’t have to be in cases as long as they are not armed with an arrow or a bolt under the bill.

Under current law, firearms must be transported in closed cases and bows and cross bows must either be in cases or unstrung.

Potawatomi State Park:

Conditions very good for skating and striding. New snow freshly groomed. Coverage 100%. Classical track well set and skate lane fairly flat.
Crossroads at Big Creek:

2 - 3 inches of new snow since the weekend. Rolled all trails on Monday and Tuesday. Skate lane in excellent condition. Very good base and only a couple of bare spots remain. Track for classic reset on Wednesday February 17th. All skiing very good to excellent.
Cherry Hills Nordic Center:

A couple inches of new snow in the last few days have the trails looking good. Trails last groomed Wednesday February 17th. Skate lane excellent. Diagonal track excellent. Track is set in both the orchard and woods. The current forecast for this weekend looks excellent.
Whitefish Dunes State Park:

Conditions are fair to good. Approximately 1.5 inches of powdery new snow fell on/around February 15th. Trails were groomed and a new track was set February 17th. In the open areas tracks are mostly good, but the area immediately North of Old Baldy has been wind-blown, and is somewhat bare. Trails in the woods are in the best condition, however, snow cover is thin in the Pine and Hemlock stands. For latest trail conditions call the park at 823-2400.
Peninsula State Park:

Most recent snow was 2 inches on February 15th. Last groomed on February 17th. Trails are soft but in good condition. Good coverage in most areas with a few small bare spots. "A ship featured in the Hollywood classic “Mutiny on the Bounty” is among four newly announced attractions coming to Green Bay this summer.

Organizers of the Baylake Bank Tall Ship Festival announced today that the festival will include the H.M.S. Bounty, which also was used in the more recent movie “Pirates of the Caribbean II.”

The festival scheduled for Aug. 13-15 on the Fox River is expected to draw 75,000 people.

A dozen ships will be showcased, including the previously announced S/V Denis Sullivan and Unicorn.

In addition to the H.M.S. Bounty, the lineup announced today includes: Amistad, a floating classroom about the American slave trade; Roseway, which focuses on marine ecology education; and Pride of Baltimore II, a top-sail schooner.

The rest of the lineup will be announced in April.

The festival, which is being produced by PMI Entertainment Group, will include interactive ship tours, sailing opportunities on some ships, maritime music and children’s entertainment.

"Winter Park Recreation Area - tube, ski or board

Kewaunee County’s Winter Park is a one-of-a-kind attraction that promises fun for the whole family. This County owned facility is specially geared to offer winter time excitement for adults as well as children. Spend a few hours or spend the whole day, either way Winter Park’s family based environment provides a unique and economical outdoor recreational setting for all.

The Winter Park tubing hill features 6 chutes and a vertical drop of 70 feet. Each run is approximately 450 feet long. Riders are transported back to the summit by a state-of-the-art tow lift that hooks each tube to the tow line and pulls riders up the hill. All the tubers need to do is sit back and enjoy the ride. The Winter Park Tube Hill is open every weekend until spring from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturdays and from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. Riders are required to rent tubes and purchase a lift ticket. The cost for Tubing is $5.00/person for 2 hours. We also offer a family rate of $18.00 for 2 hrs, up to 5 people. The Tubing hill may also be reserved on week-day-nights for groups of 50 or more. Food and beverages are available at the park. For the more daring, try your luck at the Winter Park Ski area. Choose one of the five ski runs rated from easy to more difficult. The ski area offers a 160 foot vertical drop and runs over a quarter mile in length – perfect for a family to enjoy. Skiers and snowboarders alike are transported to the summit on a T-Bar lift for an economical $10 / day lift ticket. The Ski Hill is open every weekend from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays and from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. Unfortunately, no rental equipment is available at the hill at this time.

Skiers and tubers are invited to the Winter Park Chalet to warm up by the fire and enjoy food and beverage concessions offered for sale by the Winter Park Recreation Association. Menu items include hot chocolate, soda, pizza, hotdogs, and various other snacks. Winter Park is a cash only facility, so please come prepared. Winter Park is on County F, west of Kewaunee across from Bruemmer Park and adjecent to to the historic Dana Farm.

From Green Bay take Wisconsin 29 toward Kewaunee, and turn left on Birchwood Road, then right on County F.

From the Lakeshore, take WI 42 Kewaunee and proceed west on WI 29 and take County Road C west to County F.

From WI 54 to the north, take County C south from Casco to County F.

Door County’s Home Market Continues to Dip in 2009 While Kewaunee Begins to Stabilize

Nationwide, the housing market began to slowly gain momentum with each passing quarter, ending the year up an encouraging 4.9% over 2008. The state of Wisconsin mirrored this growth with a drastic swing of being down 22.6% in the 1st quarter of 2009 to being up 25.6% in the 4th quarter. This meant an overall flat year for home sales in the state.

In Door County the average price of a home sold in the 4th quarter of 2009 decreased by 21.7%, with a 14.7% decrease for the overall year. Number of homes sold in Door County increased 8.3% in the 4th quarter of 2009 and experienced an overall drop of 7.4% when comparing 2008 to 2009.

On the other hand, Kewaunee looks as if they, along with the rest of the state, are reaping the benefits of the tax credit. In the 4th quarter of 2009, there were 46 homes sold as compared to 21 homes sold in the 4th quarter of 2008 – a 119% increase. Overall, Kewaunee County’s home market seemed to stabilize in 2009 with a 2% increase in median home price from $99,500 in 2008 to $101,500 in 2009 and a 4.3% drop in total home sales from 140 in 2008 to 134 in 2009.

Winnebago sturgeon spearers harvest 656 on opening day

Winnebago & Up River Lakes Report for Saturday, February 13, 2010

OSHKOSH, Wis. – It was a record smashing day on Lake Winnebago today for the start of the 2010 sturgeon spearing season. Fish biologists working on the Winnebago Pool of lakes have been handling fish in their spring spawning surveys in excess of 200 pounds for several years now, and finally one of these large super-trophies has shown up in the spear harvest. Ron Grishaber of Appleton registered a 212.2 pound, 84.2" sturgeon this morning at the Harrison Registration Station, west of the village of Sherwood.

Another record - the largest male sturgeon ever registered in the spear harvest -- 116.8 pounds, 71 inches -- was brought in to the Winneconne registration station at Critters.

Also a record number of fish greater than or equal to 100 pounds were registered today – 34. Thirty-one of these were taken from Lake Winnebago and 3 were taken on the Upriver Lakes.

Commenting on the number of very large fish in the Winnebago Pool population, Bruch says his team has seen it increasing over the last 15 years due to regulations developed by DNR fisheries staff and the Winnebago Citizens Sturgeon Advisory Committee. These regulations were implemented in the 1990's and were designed to decrease the annual exploitation of adult female sturgeon (which are the largest fish in the stock, but the most vulnerable to overharvest). Another reason for these regulations was due to large hatches of sturgeon over a 20-30 year period in the early 1900s that are now entering the super-trophy size in their life. Lake sturgeon, especially females, are believed to be able to live for 150 years or more. The 212 lb record breaker harvested today has not been aged yet, but it likely in excess of 100 years old.

Artist's Rave! Kewaunee WI, July 17, 18, and 19

The Kewaunee Inn, Tavern, and Bistro, along with AIR Kewaunee, our Artist's Residence Program, will be hosting an Artist's Rave the weekend of July 17th. Internationally known artists Terry Dixon, RR Lyon, TD Lyon, and Robert Brasher, along with many others, will be joined by local artists for a weekend of spontaneous exploration of the arts! Models will be on hand, painting will take place on the Porch at the Kewaunee Inn, At Hamachek Hall and the Chapel, located in Hamachek Village on the shores of Lake Michigan, and at Voda Galerie, located at 608 Milwaukee in downtown Kewaunee.

Featured events will include artists demonstrations and instructions, live painting. a show containing works by dozens of well known artists for viewing and for sale. The Kewaunee Inn Tavern and Bistro will feature dining and drinking specials all weekend, along with live musical entertainment. Saturday evening will feature a "Dinner with the Artists" at Hamachek Hall. All participating artists will be on hand for this feast, prepared by visiting Guest Chef John McKevitt. Cost for this dinner will be a $25.00 each, and dinner will be followed by a bonfire and the City of Kewaunee Fireworks show, with after dinner libations served back at the Kewaunee Inn.

Here's what's happening with us this weekend and next:

MUSIC ON THE PORCH at the historic Kewaunee Inn (the "Karsten", as it has been known). We are booking live music for Friday and Saturday nights throughout the summer on the newly opened covered porch. Starting soon; please come by for a listen, and enjoy a cocktail and the view.

GUEST CHEF at the Tavern for lunch + dinner, weekends: Join us in the Tavern and Bistro of the Inn and enjoy the presentations of Guest Chefs, sometimes celebrities, from time to time. This Saturday at dinner, "Southern Greens, with an Urban Twist". Lunch and dinner specials daily!

COOL TREATS + GIFTS at Annie's Emporium (located at 406 Milwaukee). Ice Cream, Intelligentsia Coffee, Espresso, Latte and now serving lunches; salads, wraps, sandwiches, as well as cool collectables and regional gourmet food items.

LIGHTHOUSES + SHIP PAINTINGS currently at the new Voda Galerie at 517 Milwaukee. The Voda Galerie will open a new show each month, collaborating with galleries in Chicago and New Orleans; highlighting the works of local artists, Chicago Artists, and artists from around the US and overseas.

Artist's Residency Program Opens!

We are proud to announce the opening of
> AIR-Kewaunee! After a few years of planning and building a
> concept we have arrived with a live-in residency program for
> artists of all types and those interested in art. We are
> located north of Chicago in a quiet beach town called
> Kewaunee. The summer session will last through the end of

Voda Galerie Presents Maritime Images Art Show

Voda Art Galerie Presents Maritime Images, an Art show focused on images inspired by the natural and sometimes harsh beauty of the lake and it's surrounding environs. The show opened with a well attended Grand opening reception on June 27th, and continues through July 16th. Voda Galerie is located at 517 Milwaukee in Kewaunee, and is affiliated with the Kewaunee Inn.
