"Easter Gifts Have Changed: That Bunny Brings More Than Food; Need Ideas?Any come by the Kewaunee Inn for Easter Brunch this Sunday www.kewauneeinn.com
Easter gifts have changed. Long gone are the days when a bunny with an identity crisis thought he was a chicken and laid eggs in the grass. In retrospect, this first, misguided rabbit had a wonderfully-practical Easter gift idea. Easter gifts of food are always appreciated and rarely forgotten in the back of a closet. 2211-milk-chocolate-easter-bunny-L (2)Easter eggs are an especially nutritious food; decorate them in pretty colors and children may even eat them. Hard-boiled eggs are so versatile; they can be mixed into salads and appetizers. Hard-boiled eggs were the very first pre-packaged, travel food. How ingenious! But today's Easter bunny has matured in his gift-giving." Source: Edible Antics - Having Fun With Food: Easter Gifts Have Changed: That Bunny Brings More Than Food; Need Ideas?

A gorgeous wheel of Gruyere from Switzerland was just named best cheese in the world at the 2010 World Cheese Championship in Madison.
The smear-ripened cheese, which is washed in a brine to add flavor and character, topped 2,317 other cheese entries from 20 nations around the world in the biennial contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association.
Twenty-one of the top 78 cheeses judged in Thursday's final round were made by Wisconsin cheese makers. But none of the 21 gold medal winners in their clases placed in the top three overall. Wisconsin still fared better than any other U.S. state. New York took six golds, while Idaho earned five and California four.
Another smear-ripened cheese from Switzarland called Andeerer Traum was first runner-up to the Gruyere.
For complete contest results, check out the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association Web site. For recipes and ideas for serving smear-ripened cheeses, check out next Wedneday's Food section. Semi-soft, smear-ripened cheeses made up the largest class in this year's world competition. " Source: Swiss Gruyere best cheese in world; Wisconsin takes most gold in U.S. - JSOnline

Maybe this really is Spring!
The Kewaunee area is a true powerhouse of all kinds of America's best food items
"Wisconsin Families Making Maple Syrup Signals Spring Is Back! Tour The Sugar BushesVisit the Kewaunee area; www.kewauneeinn.com
Spring is back in Wisconsin! Wisconsin maple syrup producers are tapping the trees! Wisconsin is dappled with maple syrup family farms, called Sugar Bushes. Syrup and pancakes And while cows snooze, Wisconsin families are in the woods collecting buckets of sap which they will boil into pure maple syrup. Accept no substitutions! Leave that maple-flavored corn syrup on the grocery-store shelf! Pour REAL maple syrup on your pancakes and you'll taste REAL Wisconsin.
You can tour some Wisconsin sugar bushes and see the whole maple syrup producing process. The Maple Sweet Dairy in DePere, WI is holding the next open house on March 21st. Keep reading for more Wisconsin signs of spring and a real buttermilk pancake recipe.
Kids love pancakes Long ago someone told me that a special secret to making great pancakes was to let the batter sit awhile before frying it. So this time, I mixed up the batter, took a shower and dressed and when I returned to the batter, the ingredients had mixed so that air bubbles were in the batter. I think the bubbles made the pancakes extra light and fluffy. These homemade buttermilk pancakes blew away boxed pancake mix. Such better flavor! And it really only takes a handful of minutes more to whip up these homemade pancakes.
And of course, my kids loved them swimming in real Wisconsin maple syrup!" Source: Edible Antics - Having Fun With Food: Wisconsin Families Making Maple Syrup Signals Spring Is Back! Tour The Sugar Bushes
Green Bay follows Kewaunee's example - An Irish Parade!
Wisely, the Mayor predicts it will take years to build the event to match Kewaunee's Cork's famous parade!
"The city of Green Bay will mark St. Patrick's Day next week with a celebration of music, dance, fireworks and a parade that Mayor Jim Schmitt hopes becomes an annual and growing tradition.Check it out if you are in town, but only of you've already seen the Kewaunee-Cork parade on the 14th. www.kewauneeinn.com
Schmitt hopes the event will pick up speed and become one of the city's major downtown events in three years, when St. Patrick's Day falls on a Saturday.
Murphy said he was proud of his Irish heritage, the chance to serve as honorary parade marshal and to be a part of the event.
Jon Kolb, one of the founders of the Shamrock Club, said plans already are under way to help the event grow to include a fun run and a food drive for St. Patrick's Parish's charity efforts." Source: St. Patrick's Day bash in works for Green Bay | greenbaypressgazette.com | Green Bay Press-Gazette

As seen in Crain's Chicago - New, Fresh, Interesting food at a value price is still a winner for new restaurants

The sour economy is spoiling some people's appetite for restaurant fare. Even so, restaurateurs are still launching new eateries in and around Chicago.
In fact, Chicago is seeing something of a food renaissance. Specialty groceries such as Pastoral, the French Market at Ogilvie Station and Green Grocer Chicago are providing organic and locally grown products to the city's gourmet crowd. Local food-related Web sites such as Culinary Culture and Grub Street Chicago have become places to stay up-to-date on local restaurant news, trade recipes or chat about wine pairings.
Meanwhile, new eateries, from the Publican in West Town to Feast in the Gold Coast, keep springing up despite the worst economic downturn in decades.

Did you know Mother's Day goes back to the Greeks?
And did you know it is the "Most popular day of the year"? - it beats the opening of Deer Season!
"Mother's Day HistoryPlan your Mother's Day Brunch at the Kewaunee Inn - call 920-388-0800 for a reservation.
The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and goes back to the times of ancient Greeks, who held festivities to honor Rhea, the mother of the gods. The early Christians celebrated the Mother's festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Interestingly, later on a religious order stretched the holiday to include all mothers, and named it as the Mothering Sunday. The English colonists settled in America discontinued the tradition of Mothering Sunday because of lack of time. In 1872 Julia Ward Howe organized a day for mothers dedicated to peace. It is a landmark in the history of Mother's Day.
In 1907, Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948), a Philadelphia schoolteacher, began a movement to set up a national Mother's Day in honor of her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. She solicited the help of hundreds of legislators and prominent businessmen to create a special day to honor mothers. The first Mother's Day observance was a church service honoring Anna's mother. Anna handed out her mother's favorite flowers, the white incarnations, on the occasion as they represent sweetness, purity, and patience. Anna's hard work finally paid off in the year 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday in honor of mothers.
Slowly and gradually the Mother's day became very popular and gift giving activity increased. All this commercialization of the Mother's day infuriated Anna as she believed that the day's sentiment was being sacrificed at the expense of greed and profit.
Regardless of Jarvis's worries, Mother's Day has flourished in the United States. Actually, the second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year. Although Anna may not be with us but the Mother's day lives on and has spread to various countries of the world. Many countries throughout the world celebrate Mother's Day at various times during the year, but some such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.
